Treasury : Geithner Trip to India Next Week Postponed

U.S. Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner is postponing a trip next week to India where he would have participated in an economic forum with the country's finance minister and other top officials, the Treasury Department said Tuesday.

Geithner was planning to meet with Indian Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee, but Mukherjee is expected to resign the position while he runs for president, Treasury said.

The trip was for the third annual meeting of the U.S-India Economic and Financial Partnership and was originally scheduled for June 27-28.

The Treasury Department said it looks forward to rescheduling the meeting in the months ahead.

"Mukherjee has been an effective ally in the G-20 and a strong partner in deepening the economic relationship between the United States and India," Treasury said in a statement.

Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke was also planning to participate in the trip. A Fed spokesman couldn't immediately comment on Bernanke's schedule.
