New York Times: Iraqi authorities have detained hundreds of foreign contractors

New York Times reported that U.S. authorities in Iraq recently detained hundreds of foreign contractors working in the country, including a number of American workers in the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad.

The newspaper in its issue dated Monday that the detention of those contractors were at the airport in Baghdad and some checkpoints deployed in the capital, adding that the operation came after authorities expressed doubts about the local and foreign contractors documents, visas and licenses to bear arms.

The newspaper reported that the period of detention of foreign contractors, ranging from several hours to three weeks, although the authorities did not formally charge.

Also, the newspaper reported that the Iraqi authorities imposed new restrictions on visas and residence permits of foreign contractors in the country, and gave some of the contractors 10 days to leave the country.

This, said Latif Rashid advisor to President Jalal Talabani, the Iraqi loss of confidence in the work of security contractors has led the government to impose new measures to monitor the work of foreign contractors in the country.
