Arab leaders want Syria plan implemented immediately
Arab leaders at the regional summit in Iraq's capital endorsed on Thursday a U.N.-backed peace plan for Syria which they said should be implemented "immediately and completely".
The six-point plan, drawn up by U.N.-Arab envoy Kofi Annan, calls for the withdrawal of heavy weapons and troops from population centres, humanitarian assistance, the release of prisoners and free movement and access for journalists.
Meanwhile, U.N. spokesman said Thursday that at least one million Syrians need humanitarian assistance. The speech came at the end of an international experts' assessment mission to the country.
Eight experts from the United Nations and three from the Organization for Islamic Cooperation OIC went on the government-led visits which ended Monday.
Deputy UN spokesman Eduardo del Buey said that: "The joint analysis of the OIC and UN indicates that at least one million Syrians are in need of humanitarian assistance."
