Obama toured the exhibition at a downtown Washington conference center and inspected 15 gleaming new electric and hybrid vehicles made by Ford, Dodge (a Chrysler brand) and General Motors.
"When you look at all these cars, it is testimony to the outstanding work that's been done by workers -- American workers, American designers," Obama said.
"The fact that GM is back, number one, I think shows the kind of turnaround that's possible when it comes to American manufacturing," said the president, who favors using government in some cases to create conditions for jobs growth.

London, After five years in the making, Iraq's parliament could have a first reading of a landmark oil law by early February, a senior Iraqi energy official said today.
Adnan al-Janabi, head of Iraq's oil and energy committee, said he 'hoped for some movement next month' on the legislation that is crucial to resolving a bitter feud between Baghdad and the semi-autonomous Kurdistan region over oil rights.
Janabi's committee has been poring over two versions of text that address the core disagreements between Baghdad and Arbil: the role of the governorates, the composition of the federal council, the ability of the regions and governorates to sign contracts and the issue of previously signed contracts.

EU bids to bury deficits, end Greek debt drama
EU leaders closed one chapter in the debt crisis late Monday with a new treaty supposed to end deficits -- then launched a big final push to resolve Greece's bailout woes.
European Union president Herman Van Rompuy called for a new deal with Athens "by the end of the week" on the conditions underpinning the long-delayed second bailout for Greece.
Greek Prime Minister Lucas Papademos went immediately into post-summit talks with top officials from the EU and the European Central Bank (ECB).

Bahrain's foreign ministry summoned Iraq's envoy to the Gulf kingdom on Monday over what it charged were provocative comments made by Iraqi leaders, state media said.
The ministry complained to Iraqi envoy Najla Thamer Mahmud about the "unconstructive positions expressed in statements made by officials and political and religious leaders," the official Bahrain News Agency reported.

It is the Chinese Lunar New Year, and yesterday New York City's Sino-community marched from Little Italy to Chinatown in celebration.
The Chinese New Year lasts 15 days and started last week on January 23rd. While not everyone takes a full two weeks off from work, each day of the holiday has some traditional association. Some are for a wife to visit her parents and others are designated as days when friends visit friends. One is even set aside as a day to stay home. But most are about celebrating in one form or another, as well as offering thanks to the gods.
The parade featured local politicians, visitors from China, marching bands, traditional bands, and of course lots of dragon dancers.

The Obama administration is preparing to begin talks with Iraq on defining a long-term defense relationship that may include expanded U.S. training help, according to Defense Secretary Leon Panetta’s chief policy aide.
Michele Flournoy, who is leaving her Pentagon post on Friday to return to private life, said in an interview with a small group of reporters that the administration is open to Iraqi suggestions about the scope and depth of defense ties.
“One of the things we’re looking forward to doing is sitting down with the Iraqis in the coming month or two to start thinking about how they want to work with” the U.S. military to develop a program of exercises, training and other forms of security cooperation, Flournoy said.

Let me begin by thanking Chatham House for inviting me to speak about the Middle East and North Africa - MENA.
With an estimated population of more than 300 million people, the countries of the MENA region have a great diversity of people, languages and cultures. They also have many things in common, which has given them a strong sense of identity.
Some call the MENA region the "cradle of civilization". Three of the world's major religions began there. And it has certainly played an important role in history.
But I am not here to talk about religion or ancient history. I will leave that to someone else. I would like to speak about OPEC's Member Countries in MENA - their role in the energy balance and their importance to the rest of the world.

The MENA region's geographic position - and its abundant natural resources - have given it immense strategic importance. And its circumstances have become closely linked to the stability of the rest of the world. This is why it should always be kept in a state of peace and tranquillity.

Baghdad, The Central Bank of Iraq had begun to study the need of the project to delete the zeros to submit a bill to the House of Representatives for the purpose of legislation setting out the mechanisms and controls the process of removing three zeroes from the local currency, stressing that its law gives him the powers of a change in their local currency.
This comes at a time confirmed the Parliamentary Finance Committee, the central bank lingered in the provision of a bill to delete the zeros from the currency to the Committee for the purpose of his study, confirming the same time the law was passed that would give Iraq an opportunity to address inflation.
And inflation is the excessive rise in the general level of prices and higher cash income as well as high costs and create excessive cash balances.
It is expected to increase inflation in the budget in 2012 due to continued attention to the operational aspects at the expense of the investment part of the budget.
The deputy governor of the Central Bank of the appearance of Mohammed Saleh said that "the CBI submitted a working paper for the project to delete the zeros of the local currency to the Council of Ministers for the involvement of ministries and agencies in the process of deleting the requirements of the zeros to prevent harm from the process."
Saleh added that "the central bank is considering sending a bill to the House or not because the law gives the Central Bank of implied powers to delete the zeros of the local currency."
He continued that "the proposed deletion of zeros from the currency needed to raise the awareness of national popularity and status of the regulations limiting the phenomenon of currency manipulation during the replacement period"

Trade ministers hopeful for Doha Round future
DAVOS, Switzerland, Trade ministers and business leaders are not giving up on the much-delayed Doha Round of global trade negotiations, but they admit that it is not in the best of health. "Doha is not dead," Craig Emerson, Minister of Trade of Australia, told participants at the World Economic Forum Annual Meeting in Davos-Klosters, Switzerland. "I think there's enough life in the Doha Round to persist with it."

CAIRO, An Arab League delegation is set to head to Baghdad on Monday for a four-day preparation visit of the Arab Summit, scheduled at the Iraqi capital in late March.
The delegation will be headed by the Deputy Secretary General Ahmad bin Helli.
Speaking to reporters at the Arab League's headquarters in Cairo, Bin Helli said that the preparations, which include logistical and technical issues, will be discussed with Iraqi senior officials.
The summit was postponed from last year, and is the first held in Iraq since the fall of former late president Saddam Hussein.

In the reorganization, Christian Meissner will become head of global corporate investment banking, while two former co-heads of the unit will take on new roles, according to a memo sent to employees on Sunday by co-chief operating officer Tom Montag that was obtained by Reuters.

A commission of economy and investment representative for the Iraqi Central Bank to take a new financial measures in the coming days to curb the smuggling of hard currency.
A member of the Committee of Economy and Investment parliamentary deputy for the coalition in Iraq Qusay Friday "is that a meeting took place recently with the Chairman of the Commission on Money Laundering and the Deputy Governor of Central Bank of Iraq and the Central Committee and the Economic Commission to discuss the issue of smuggling of foreign currency to Iran in order to solve this problem and find effective solutions to them."
